Soprano Agnes Selma Weiland will make her debut in the title role of TURANDOT in Giacomo Puccini's opera at the Stadttheater Bremerhaven in the 2024/25 season under the baton of Marc Niemann. During the summer, she regularly performs at the Bad Aussee Festival with the Vienna State Opera Ballet Association in productions directed by Mihail Sosnovschi. In November 2023, she released her CD "SOLO ME," recorded with the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra Olomouc under the musical direction of Peter Valentovic.
The German soprano, praised for her "powerful youthful dramatic soprano and top highs" (Klaus Billand), had a successful performance in 2022 as Brünnhilde in "RING IN 100 MINUTES" in Leipzig, directed by Jasmin Solfaghari. She was celebrated as a "magnificent operetta diva with a balanced and warm-timbred soprano" (S. Ruprecht) at the renowned New Year's concert of the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra in the Bulgaria Hall, Sofia, Bulgaria, under the musical direction of Svetoslav Borislov.
In the summer of 2019, she was engaged for the title role in G. Verdi's AIDA at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl. In 2018, she made a notable debut as Elisabeth in R. Wagner's TANNHÄUSER and excelled as Helmwige in R. Wagner's WALKÜRE at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl. She was also engaged as the 3rd Norn in Wagner's GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG. In the previous year, she was contracted by Gustav Kuhn as Elsa in R. Wagner's LOHENGRIN.
In autumn 2018, Agnes Selma Weiland performed Verdi's MESSA DA REQUIEM at the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles, Belgium, under the direction of Eric Delson, and Beethoven's 9th Symphony at the Nikolaikirche Potsdam during the concert celebrating the Day of German Unity.
She made her Swiss debut in March 2016 as the 1st Lady in Mozart's THE MAGIC FLUTE at the Theater Basel. In autumn 2015, she excelled as Leonora in G. Verdi's IL TROVATORE. She also acted as Sieglinde, Senta, and Elsa for the renowned film director Jens Neubert.
Since the 2014/15 season, the soprano has sung Sieglinde in Wagner's RING FÜR KINDER at the Oper Leipzig. She shone under the direction of Rosamund Gilmore in the world premiere of Susan Oswell's opera ZELDA in April 2014 in the title role. Since the 2012/2013 season, she has performed as the 1st Lady in Mozart's THE MAGIC FLUTE at the Oper Leipzig. In 2013, she sang the title role in Hindemith's SANCTA SUSANNA at the Theater Bonn, where she also appeared as Ratasata and the 3rd Girl in Hindemith's NUSCH NUSCHI under the direction of GMD Stefan Blunier.
In the 2010/2011 season, the young soprano debuted at the Opéra National de Lyon, France, in Mozart's LE NOZZE DI FIGARO. The following year, she gained international attention in the title role of Hindemith's opera SANCTA SUSANNA and impressed in David Pountney's successful production of Puccini's GIANNI SCHICCHI as Nella at the Opera House Lyon.
During her postgraduate studies, Agnes Selma Weiland was engaged at the Theater Bremen, where she sang major roles, including the 1st Lady in Mozart's THE MAGIC FLUTE, Rosalinde in Strauss's operetta DIE FLEDERMAUS, Donna Elvira in Mozart's DON GIOVANNI, and Ghita in Zemlinsky's DER ZWERG. As Madame Lidoine in Poulenc's DIALOGUES DES CARMÉLITES, she captivated audiences in Berlin under the musical direction of Errico Fresis.
Agnes Selma Weiland was born in Dresden. She initially studied with Prof. Britta Schwarz in Dresden and completed her first state examination for teaching at grammar schools in music and Italian. She earned her diploma within three years at the University of Music and Theatre "Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy" in Leipzig, studying singing with Prof. Hans-Joachim Beyer. As a member of the Opera Studio of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, she was a master student of Renata Scotto. During her artistic postgraduate studies at the Berlin University of the Arts, she worked with KS Prof. Dagmar Schellenberger, and later with KS Renate Behle, Kirsten Schötteldreier, and Brigitte Jäger.
Her vocal development was further enriched by masterclasses with Edith Wiens, KS Franz Grundheber, Simon Estes, KS Gabriele Fontana, KS Olaf Bär, Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet, KS Renate Behle, and Kirsten Schötteldreier. In the field of lieder, she worked with Axel Bauni, Eric Schneider, and Christoph Staude.
Agnes Selma Weiland has an extensive concert career both in Germany and abroad. She has performed at venues such as the Gewandhaus Leipzig, the Frauenkirche Dresden, the Laeiszhalle Hamburg, the Admiralspalast and the Konzerthaus Berlin, and has been heard in Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain, Ireland, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, and the USA. Under the direction of Reinhard Goebel, she sang a series of concerts featuring Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio during RUHR 2010, including a performance at the Zeche Zollverein Essen.
Agnes Selma Weiland is a scholarship recipient of the Richard Wagner Association Leipzig. In 2009, she won the 3rd Prize and the Audience Prize at the 24th International Robert Stolz Competition. At the XIII Concurso Internacional de Canto de Bilbao in 2010, she won the 3rd Prize and the Critics' Prize. Agnes Selma Weiland is also a scholarship recipient of the GVL.
